Gene Sloan, a journalist who covers the cruise industry at The Cruise Log, reports that Carnival Corporation says cabins are filling up faster than a year ago. Howard Frank, vice chairman of Carnival Corp, which owns Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America, Princess, Cunard and Costa Cruises, says that cruising is booming.
This comes as a surprise since I’ve noticed that space is available on Carnival’s christmas cruises for the first time in memory. And, I’ve seen low prices advertised on ships during spring break.
In his blog, Sloan writes, “in the past it’s often paid to wait until the last minute to book a cruise to get the best deal. But last’minute bargains may be harder to snatch throughout 2008.”
How far in advance to you normally book a cruise? Have you found many last-minute deals?

1I usually book six months in advance to lock in the cabin I want. Has worked well for me.

2Especially if your heart is set on a balcony cabin, it’s important to book far in advance. When I collect my Wednesday bargains, frequently there are no balcony cabins available.
One cruise line exec told me the top (suites) and bottom categories of cabins sell out first.

3earlier the better, but we have booked as late as 3 months early ( a great deal ) this cruise we are booked a year ahead, and it has flown by, in two weeks, we are headed to the cabin for our first night sleep on board. usually it is 6-9 months early.

5I am booked on the new Carnival Splendor leaving Fort Lauderdale on 31st January 2009. I had to struggle to get a cabin in the end (booked in December 2007) as it was totally sold out.

6Wow! That is amazing, especially since January is frequently a soft month (after the holiday, before the winter rush). Thanks for telling us.
