EDITOR’S NOTE: OOOPS. You do get cash back. The unused portion of the onboard credit is applied to your credit card at the end of the cruise. So Carnival really does give “cash back”. My apology. Anne Campbell
Carnival Cruise Lines is launching the new “Cash Back” program available on many departures this summer.
The only hitch is you don’t actually get cash back.
The partial refund is applied to your shipboard credit, which means you can only spend it on items related to your cruise such as tips, shore excursions, spa treatments, purchases in the ship’s shops and drinks. It is actually onboard credit, which is very common in the cruise industry. In general onboard purchases have declined as passengers cut spending during the recession. This is a good incentive to encourage you to spend more.
To get Carnival’s “cash back” program, cruisers must apply for it when they book their cruise between now and May 10, 2009. Passengers will receive a $100 per stateroom shipboard credit on three- and four-day cruises; $150 per stateroom credit on five day voyages and $240 per cabin credit for voyages ranging from six to eight days.
What effect has the economy had on your onboard spending?

1I went on a cruise 2 weeks ago. Despite the economic situation the ship seemed very full, and many people were spending a lot. I believe once you made the decision to go on a cruise, you basically know you will spend more money on the ship as well and don’t hold back. At least that is happened to my wife and me.

2Low prices have attracted lots of experienced cruisers who know these great prices won’t last forever…. Personally I have to decided to cut purchases before I go or cruise bliss addles my brains and I can’t think like an adult!

3I still think their cash-back program is good despite not actually giving you cash back directly. Traveling on any cruise ship has expenses that we never budgeted for and here may be the extra cash you need for those onboard extras. I personally do not know of anybody that has kept on budget on a cruise. Without fail they under-budget and this leads me to think the cruise ships themselves, perhaps the online travel company that sold you your tickets, or perhaps both should work out a sensible realistic budget for people . Perhaps they feel if they tell you all the incidental costs that you’ll go elsewhere looking for a better deal. There should be a mandatory disclosure “before” disembarking so that the cruise is more to your worked out budget. This would take the strain of money worries away and lend more time for why your taking the cruise in the first place, which is probably to have fun and to relax. Bon Voyage!
