Carnival Corporation has announced a fuel surcharge of $5 per person, per day for Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America, Princess Cruises, Cunard Line, Costa Cruises and Seabourn Cruise Line. Effective for cruises beginning on or after Feb. 1, 2008, the surcharge applies only to first and second passengers sharing a cabin and will not exceed $70 per person, per voyage. The fuel surcharge will be bundled with port charges and taxes in the basic price of the cruise and won’t be an extra charge that suddenly appears after the purchase of your seagoing vacation.
Last month Regent Seven Seas Cruises announced a $7.50 per person, per day fuel surcharge on all 2008 voyages. On Tuesday, the airlines also announced that fare prices will increase.
We predict that growing economic problems and concerns coupled with growing capacity in the cruise industry will result in lower passenger numbers for the remainder of 2007 and into 2008. When this happens, however, cruise lines cut their fares and offer steep discounts to entice cruisers, good news if you’re a bargain hunter.

1It’s a SCAM what Carnival is doing to us for booking early .There $70.00 fuel supplement will come back to bite then in the -ss .You can rest assure that the sharks will be fed very well 3 times a day. We all need to load up our plates full of food and dumpem overboard or in the face of the buffet manager. That will surely get back to the Ceo of Carnival. There $ 70.00 fuel Supplememt will now cost them $700,000.00 in extra food. So show me where the savings is. As for the tips the crew will be deducted $ 70.00 and i have no problem telling them why and if they want it they can go ask the Ceo of Carnival for it back. “Remeber no crew to ship” = NO $$$ for Carnival this is the only way they will get the message , we all have to stick together on this one ,if not next year it will just be something else like the price of Dinner rolls went up so we have to charge you more … See you all on the Lido deck for the Shark feeding Festival……….

2I disagree. The price of fuel has skyrocketed and this will hit us in our wallets more and more. Fuel bills will be higher this winter. Food prices will increase because most of it is trucked to supermarkets. All industries dependant on fuel (aviation, shipping, trucking) have had to increase prices.
It would be terrible to penalize the hard working crew just because costs have risen.
One reason fuel has increased so much is that the U.S. dollar is so weak. If you’re going to get angry, I suggest that you direct it to the U.S. government.

3I would have no problem paying the fuel charge its just the way they went about doing it. they should have told us when we booked it that there would be a fuel ,not wait to all our plans are set and vacations have been put in and then tell when its too late to change or cancell because we are already inside the penalty window . Should i tell that to The US Government or blame it on the US weak dollar . Get with the times ….

4They only announced the fuel surcharge Nov. 9 (all the other cruise lines followed suit the next day). Have you spoken to your travel agent about cancelling the cruise (without penalty) since you think the extra charge is unfair? If it’s going to affect the enjoyment of your cruise it may be a good route to take.

5As we can see you are probably the only one in the world who thinks theses cruise ships buy the fuel in the US. “WEAK Dollar “. They hardly ever buy it in the US .As for the enjoyment of the cruise the only people it will affect will be the crew of the ship. Its a shame to have to happen but something has got to be done NOW. It seems to me that you must be a part of the cruise industry. Take your job security tactics elsewhere and peddle them . ITS NOT WORKING HERE…

6Hi,
I just cancelled two cabins booked in March because of the fuel sircharge. I feeled that Carival implemented this program poorly from the beginning. The only people that are going to be the loosers are the one that make your bed and clean the tables. People are going to reduce their gruity to compensate.

7I asked Carnival about the fuel surcharge and they replied:
“The price the company pays for fuel has increased 140 percent over the past three years, with a 50% increase occurring in just the last seven months. The
implementation of the fuel supplement beginning February 1, 2008 will result in consumers paying approximately one-third of our year-over-year
fuel cost INCREASES over the first six months of the fiscal year.”
I’m sure all cruise lines will find their business suffering because of the fuel surcharges. I expect the cost of most things will increase while fuel is this high.

8I read where if you booked your cruise prior to Feb 1st and the cruise takes place after Feb 1st that you didn’t have to pay the fuel sircharge. This had something to do with a lawsuit in Fla. Do you have any information?

9My opinion is that Carnival should just include the surcharge as part of the overall cost of the cruise and people would then not get upset about it as an extra they have to pay. If you have already booked when the surcharge was announced then they (Carnival and the others) should absorb the cost for those cruisers.
Adding the cost as an extra is only making people mad at them and think twice about taking a cruise now and in the future.

10Yes, I agree. Cruise lines make the fuel surcharge and port charges extra so they don’t have to pay a commission on it to travel agents.

12No, you won’t have to pay a surcharge. You booked before the surcharge was implemented.
Have fun!
