Royal Caribbean always launches the first ship in a new series with what company executives call the “wow” factor. The first Voyager ship: rock climbing. The first Freedom-class ship: “flow-rider surfing”. So you can be sure that Celebrity Cruises, which is owned by RCI, will also float the brand new Celebrity Solstice with bells and whistles.
Ok, kids, here it is, hang on to your chair: it’s a half acre of grass. Wow. Hey, it’s REAL grass, sans the weeds, fallen leaves and squirrels.
All kidding aside, it will be dreamy to play croquet at the Lawn Club which will be located on Celebrity Solstice’s top deck (however, factoring in the wind on a deck 15 stories off the ocean, I may have to forgo balls). In addition to croquet and bocce ball passengers can picnic with a basket of wine and cheese. The Sunset Bar and Patio on the Lawn will be adjacent facilities. And, after a game of bocce, you can pop into the Hot Glass Studio and watch glass blowers practice their craft.
Any suggestions on a “Wow” activity or feature for the next series of new ships?

1Is it possible the cruise lines are now smitten with Europe because that is where they are making all the money? First we get “fencing lessons” on Cunard and now we have “lawn bowling” and “bocce ball” on Solstice,
What else can we do to make cruising appeal more to the Europeans? a soccer arena and bicycle lanes? How about Octoberfest Hofbrauhauses or dartboards in every pub?

2Well, horse racing and dog shows are also popular in Europe!
Frankly, just give me a lovely ship with terrific food and service and skip everything else.
