Some 292 passengers and 16 crew members have been struck by Norovirus aboard Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas during a 12-night Baltic cruise sailing round-trip from Harwich, UK.
According to the Harwich Standard, Royal Caribbean will commence deep cleaning when the ship returns to port on June 12 which will delay the ship’s departure on its next cruise a few hours.
Royal Caribbean and Celebrity have both been plagued by outbreaks of norovirus, which causes vomiting and diarrhea, dehydration and dizziness. As previously reported, Vision of the Seas suffered its fourth outbreak a few weeks ago.

1I read this news on a cruise forum last week and now more and more sources are confirming it is Norovirus. I can’t believe how many ships are being struck down with norovirus at the moment and it is starting to worry me a bit! why can’t the cruise lines get it under control?! I don’t understand what they are all doing so wrong!

2I actually cruised aboard Holland America in the Baltic during the same time as these ships got sick and quarantined. The key with norovirus is WASHING YOUR HANDS!! Its not just one person or the cruise line, the ENTIRE SHIP must wash hands constantly all day long everytime you eat etc. HAL is very careful and they actually kept the foods isolated and served us on the LIDO for the first three days. After that, in absence of someone coming down with the bug, we were allowed to serve ourselves. The ships are not infected, its the people coming onto them. People travel through airports and large areas of uncleaned, germy zones and then board the ships not having washed properly. They touch a surface and someone else touches it and then you have an expotential break out. WE made sure we never touch railings anywhere, we pushed elevator buttons with our elbows or knuckles, when we used the computers, we wiped them down with disinfectant first. You don’t have to go crazy, you just have to be conscientious. For its part, I found Holland America line, as always to be the cleanest, nicest, friendliest crew and ship on the seas. Credit to them for keeping us safe and healthy. I only trust them to be vigilant. RC, Celeb, and that Norweigan line (forget the name) seem to always be the ones with the Noro
