The Florida Attorney General’s Office announced today that Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara will refund $21 million to passengers nationwide who were charged a fuel surcsharge after they booked their cruise. Under the agreements signed yessterday between RCI and the Florida Attorney General’s Office, all consumers who were retroactively charged a fuel supplement will be refunded the full cost of the surcharge. Passengers booked before Nov. 16 who paid the fuel supplement and have taken their cruise will receive a refund. And, passengers booked before Nov. 16 who paid the supplement and have not taken their cruise will receive their refund as an onboard credit.
After numerous consumer complaints, the Florida Attorney General’s Office is also investigating allegations that several cruise lines engaged in price setting the fuel surcharges during a Caribbean conference last fall.
